Brazil’s Bolsonaro will be subpoenaed in a jewelry scandal, says the minister

RIO DE JANEIRO, March 13 (Reuters) – Brazilian former President Jair Bolsonaro will be called to testify as part of an investigation into accusations he tried to illegally bring $3.2 million of jewelry into the country, Justice Minister Flavio Dino said on Monday.

“We have inquiries in progress, hearings taking place, and at some point, the former president will be subpoenaed,” Dino told reporters after an event in Rio de Janeiro.

Jewelry, electronic scams on the rise in southern Alberta

RCMP officials are warning the public of a group of scam artists who are making their way around southern Alberta and preying on the good-natured or financially motivated.

According to Mounties, groups have been approaching people in parking lots, gas stations and in other public areas this month, with offers to sell gold jewelry or electronics at extremely low prices.

The suspects, who have been seen driving newer-model rental vehicles and have had children with them, offer sob stories involving broken or lost bank cards and claim they’re selling the items to fund the rest of their travels.

Brazil’s Bolsonaro denies illegal acts with seized jewelry

BRASILIA, Brazil (AP) — Brazil’s former president Jair Bolsonaro said Saturday that he’d done nothing illegal following reports that he tried to bring jewelry worth more than $3 million into the country in 2021 without declaring it to authorities.

The jewelry – a set of earrings, a necklace, a ring and a watch of the Swiss brand Chopard – had been given as a gift to Bolosonaro by the Saudi Arabian government when he was in office, according to a report Friday at the O Estado de São Paulo newspaper.

Ex-con out on bail for prior shooting busted in wild botched jewelry store robbery

An ex-con let out on bail in a Brooklyn shooting allegedly opened fire inside a jewelry store just six months later during a botched robbery that left a worker injured.

Joseph Gonzalez, 45, was arrested Tuesday over the brazen daytime shooting at A&M Jewelry store on Fifth Avenue near 48th Street in Sunset Park, police said.

Gonzalez — who has a lengthy rap sheet and served two previous stints in prison — was out on $75,000 bail in another case of gun violence at the time of the Feb. 5 attempted heists, according to cops and records.
