The Meaning Behind Kate Middleton’s Jewelry at King Charles’s Coronation

The Princess of Wales included a subtle tribute to Queen Elizabeth II through her jewelry at King Charles III’s coronation.

Princess Kate paid homage to the late monarch by donning the George VI Festoon necklace, which was originally made for then-Princess Elizabeth in 1950 at the request of her father, King George VI. The stunning piece includes strands of diamonds.

Another special set of jewelry that honors a royal family member passed? The pearl-and-diamond earrings Kate wore to Westminster Abbey also originally belonged to Princess Diana.

For the occasion, Kate wore an ivory silk crepe dress with silver floral and leaf embroidery, designed by Alexander McQueen, plus a shimmering silver Jess Collett x Alexander McQueen headpiece (which, it was decided, not a tiara).

She and Prince William also wore formal robes and mantels, at the request of King Charles and Queen Camilla.

In the lead up to the historic occasion (which marks the first British coronation to occur in 70 years), Kate put a patriotic, yet subtle, twist on her outfits while attending public engagements this past week. The royal spent each engagement in a different monochromatic outfit that boasted the colors of the United Kingdom’s flag: red, white, and blue.

On Thursday, she and Prince William headed to Soho’s Dog & Duck Pub to meet with workers who were preparing for coronation festivities. For the casual outing, Kate wore a long coat dress in a bright poppy red color from Eponine London. The piece includes long buttons down the center, a standing collar, and long sleeves. Underneath, she layered with an ivory white midi dress, then further coordinated with white pumps and a white purse.

The following day, Kate and William embarked on a coronation eve walkabout, where they were greeted by well-wishers at Buckingham Palace. Then, Kate looked elegant in a white long-sleeved midi dress with black trim, which she paired with black pumps and a black clutch.

Later in the evening, the princess attended a reception for foreign heads of state, where she spoke with first lady Dr. Jill Biden and Ukraine’s first lady Olena Zelenska. She swapped her white dress for a vibrant cobalt blue piece, which included twisted ruching details across the body, gold buttons, and a matching tiny belt attached to the waist.
