The Koh-i-Noor and Cullinan diamonds: Crown jewels have fraught history

For decades, Britain has been giving back its spoils of empire: the Stone of Scone to Scotland in 1996, Hong Kong to China in 1997 and, most recently, some of the Benin bronzes, with perhaps more to follow.

But, so far, that spirit of returning what was taken has not extended to the British crown jewels — specifically to the Koh-i-Noor diamond, which will be kept out of sight during King Charles III’s coronation Saturday, and the Cullinan diamonds, which will feature heavily.

Where the Koh-i-Noor diamond was first pulled from the earth is unknown,

Rare Diamond Within a Diamond Is Unearthed in India and Dubbed ‘The Beating Heart’

The Beating Heart Diamond – VD Global, released

In India, a diamond company has its hands on a jewel that is rarer than rare—a large, hollow diamond, inside of which rests another, smaller diamond.

Dubbed the “Beating Heart,” there is enough room inside the cavity to allow the smaller diamonds to tumble around. Only one other such discovery has ever been made, and the company hopes to leave it uncut and unpolished to promote the natural splendor of the gemology therein.

Nobody in Belgium wants Russian “blood diamonds” any more, but the next round of EU sanctions still won’t ban them.

“Consumers don’t want to buy diamonds with blood on them,” said Vicky Reynaert, a Belgian left-wing MP.

“Everybody knows what’s being done with the money by Alrosa [Russia’s biggest diamond firm] — it’s going directly to finance the war against Ukraine”, she said.

Reynaert spoke to EU observer after a Belgian parliament committee, on Tuesday (25 April), backed her resolution calling for the Belgian government to support an EU-wide embargo on Russian stones.

The consumers in Reynaert’s focus groups aside,

Rare of rare ‘diamond within diamond’ unearthed in India

A company in India’s Surat says it has unearthed a unique “diamond within a diamond” – one of the rarest of the rare when it comes to such stones.

The firm VD Global has given the rare piece the moniker the ‘Beating Heart,’ and says it consists of a piece of diamond that had another smaller piece trapped inside, and that was moving freely, according to Times of India.

The 0.329-carat stone was initially found in the rough in October last year by the diamond manufacturer which operates from Surat and Mumbai and has a business spread globally.
