Quaoar Had One ‘Impossible’ Ring, Then Astronomers Found Two

Scientists still do not fully understand how dust and gas in the early solar system coalesced into moons and planets.

Like the first ring around the Quaoar, announced by a team of astronomers in February, the second ring lies beyond what is known as the Roche limit. Material orbiting closer than this distance tends to be pulled apart by tidal forces. Thus, a ring within the Roche limit would tend to remain a ring, while a ring of debris outside the Roche limit would usually coalesce into a moon.

US president meets Michael D Higgins in Dublin

The US President, Joe Biden, has said it is a “pleasure to be back” as he met Irish President Michael D Higgins in Dublin.

He is spending most of Thursday in the company of leading Irish politicians.

He started his working day with a visit to Áras an Uachtaráin – the home of the Irish president in Phoenix Park.

President Biden inspected a military guard of honor, and signed the visitors’ book. He also planted an oak tree and set the Bell of Peace.

The bell was erected in 2008 to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement.

Mountain lion pack caught on Ring video in Colorado neighborhood at night

Mountain lions are a natural part of the ecology in Colorado, so they get closer to people that you might expect on occasion, CBS Colorado’s Jack Lowenstein oberves.

Carolyn Andrews shared Ring doorbell video with CBS Colorado of one incident such from April 1, when a group of mountain lions was seen walking through her neighborhood at night. She lives in Silverthorne, some 67 miles west of Denver.
