the DiamondLeague the season is in full swing and this week it’s the turn of Paris to host the prestigious athletics event.
the Paris DiamondLeague (otherwise known as Meeting de Paris) promises to be nothing short of a classic, with top athletes from across the world converging on Stade Charlety on June 9th to test their mettle against the highest level of international competition.
Jakob Ingebrigtsen will take aim at a world record in the men’s 2-miles event – with the mark he is attacking having not been bettered in 27 years.
But that’s just the beginning of the fun.
Watch out for a stellar group of global athletes battling for honors in France’s capital, including the likes of Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone in the 400m, Grant Holloway in the 110m hurdles, Noah Lyles and Marcell Jacobs in the 100m, Keely Hodgkinson in the 800m, Dina Asher-Smith in the 200m and many more stars aiming to show their form two months out of the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest.
Athletes to watch at the Paris Diamond League 2023
Jakob Ingebrigtsen competes in the non-Olympic 2-mile event at the Paris Diamond League, with the world record of Kenya’s Daniel Comment – set all the way back in 1997 – on the line.
If Ingebrigtsen is to become the world’s fastest runner over the distance, he will need to set a time quicker than 7:58.61. However, with wave light technology and pacers in place for the race, expect a rapid showing from the Norwegian Olympic 1500m champion and reigning world 5000m title holder.
Another Olympic champion on the start list for Paris is the 400m hurdles champion, Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone. The American is due to race the 400m in Paris where much is expected of her as she transitions to the flat discipline.
While Mclaughlin-Levrone has become an expert in navigating the obstacles, her world record time in the 400m hurdles at last year’s World Athletics Championships would have put her into the final of the flat event.
It makes for an intriguing prospect in a year when she has the opportunity to double at the Worlds in Budapest just a year out from Paris 2024.
In the men’s 100m, Italy’s Olympic gold medal list Marcell Jacobs is slated to face Noah Lylesshould the former have recovered from the injury that kept him out of a highly anticipated showdown with Fred Kerley in Florence.
Lyles, who is the 200m world champion and American record holder, will be aiming for victory over the shorter distance as he prepares for upcoming challenges that include defending his world title in August in Budapest.
The USA duo of Grant Holloway and Trey Cunningham will go head-to-head in Paris, with the world gold and silver medallist, respectively, aiming to put on a show in the 110m hurdles.
Also watch out for the 2023 Diamond League debut of Great Britain’s Olympic silver medallist Keely Hodgkinson in the women’s 800m, while in the men’s 800m the reigning world champion Jake Wightman will represent the Brits having overcome the injuries that blighted his indoor season.
Dina Asher-Smith is also on the entry list for the women’s 200m, as Britain sent a strong contingent to the event in Paris.
Home fans will be eager to see Kevin Mayerwith the French decathlete competing in a ‘triathlon’ event that includes the 110m hurdles, shot put and long jump.
Other stars are expected to make an appearance including the US discus star Valerie Allman400m hurdles supremo Rai Benjamin and in-form pole vaulter Katie Moon.
