Jewels from Larkspur & Hawk, a New York City-based jewelry brand founded and led by Emily Satloff, are dominating the new QueenCharlotte series, which debuted on May 4th on Netflix. Satloff’s creations, which are centered around foils (historically used to brighten jewels and make them shimmer in candlelight), are always rooted in past designs and influences, making the partnership kismet.
“The young queen lived during a time that produced my favorite jewelry; jewelry that I have admired, collected and been inspired for decades,” says Satloff. “It’s especially rewarding to see Larkspur & Hawk sparkling throughout the trailer on the beautiful up-and-coming Indian actress Amarteifio, who brilliantly plays the title character.”
Satloff, who himself is an antiquarian and historian (she studied the history of decorative arts at both Sotheby’s and Cooper Hewitt before beginning her career in curation for museums), lent the show’s costume designer, Lyn Paolo, many of her girandole earrings and rivière necklaces because these pieces would have been seen adorning women during the Georgian period in England.
More From Veranda
While stone-cutting is more advanced and foiled jewels are not necessary to enhance the sparkle of jewelry, Satloff has committed himself to preserving this technique in his collections. While antique jewelry serves as her main source of inspiration—and the foiled jewels of the Georgian era were the original jumping-off point for Larkspur & Hawk—Satloff also finds inspiration in antique textiles, architecture, and other motifs derived from her own collections of antique furniture, books, and objects.
“I have always thought of myself as a conduit to the past, and here, I was being given a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be an 18th century British Queen’s jeweler,” says Satloff. “What ensued over the coming months included seeing and hearing more about the costumes and the show, so that I might make jewelry recommendations, as well as my study of Queen Charlotte and the unique life she shared with King George III.”
Over 50 pieces from Larkspur & Hawk were used during the filming of QueenCharlotte—here, some of our favorites you can shop for yourself.
