Menstruation, but make it fashion. That was the name of the game for 25-year-old period activist Nadya Okamoto who recently turned heads by wearing earrings that look like used tampons on the red carpet.

“It was super last minute, but it felt very on-theme,” Okamoto tells Yahoo Life of her accessory choice for the premiere of Amazon Prime’s new mini-series Dead Ringers, which is based on the 1988 psychological thriller about twin gynecologists. “I would have done it anyway. Even

Earring front and back – Archaeological State Office of Schleswig-Holstein

Hoard Alert! The metal detectives of Europe struck gold once again—this time in Germany as bejeweled earrings and silver coins were turned up in Schleswig-Holstein.

The jewelry was all of gold and probably made by the Byzantines. The rings, earrings, and a brooch, all studded with gems, were deliberately buried along with 30 coins minted under the Danish King Valdemar II.

This helps date the burying of the hoard to around 1240 CE.

Schleswig-Holstein was called Hedeby at the time the riches were brought there. The area was part of

After Sending ‘Girl With a Pearl Earring’ Out on Loan, the Mauritshuis Has Hung an AI Facsimile in Its Place. Fans Are Not Happy

Currently on view in that gallery, in fact, are five interpretations of Vermeer’s instructable portrait, all created by art fans.

Well, sort of. One of the imitation Vermeers was actually generated by AI—and its inclusion in the state museum has caused quite a stir.

The piece, called A Girl With Glowing Earringswas submitted by German AI artist Julian van

“I felt anxious before I came here today,” Rosa Valdes said as she arranged her Educated Chola T-shirts, totes and mugs inside the Cafe Girasol coffee shop in Boyle Heights. “Just because I took anti-anxiety medication, it doesn’t mean it’s gone.”

While friend and colleague Beth Guerra, a brand strategist she met at the Los Angeles Economic Equity Accelerator & Fellowship program at Cal State LA, offers support and helps soothe her nerves for a photo shoot, Valdes takes a deep breath and forges ahead.

Valdes is used to living with anxiety. In 2018, the 33-year-old entrepreneur was diagnosed with

Johannes Vermeer, “Girl with a Pearl Earring” (1664-67) (image courtesy Mauritshuis, The Hague)

Fans and scholars might be surprised to learn that the earring in Johannes Vermeer’s “Girl with a Pearl Earring” (1664–67) may have been an imitation gem. The work is one of the Dutch artist’s most iconic paintings and was inspired by a 1995 historical novel that was adapted into a 2003 film starring Scarlett Johansson and Colin Firth. This discovery is one of many explored by the Rijksmuseum’s Vermeer retrospective, which opened on February 10.

Vermeer bringing together new research and 28 paintings, many of which institutions
