Fifteen years ago, Toronto-based jewelry designer Dean Davidson set out to create a jewelry brand that offered alluring accessories at an approachable price.
The celebrity-loved brand — Meghan Markle, Cardi B and Kate Hudson are just a few of the stars that have worn Davidson’s designs — has stayed true to that mission, becoming known for its statement-making pieces inspired by the “beauty and culture” of various global destinations.
We caught up with the designer to learn more:
Q: For those who aren’t familiar, what is Dean Davidson jewelry?
A: Dean Davidson is a demi-fine jewelry company. Our contemporary designs attract women from around the world who want the look and quality of fine jewelry at an accessible price point. We have partnered with a family owned factory in Jaipur, India, which has been in the fine jewelry business for over 100 years.
Q: Who is the target customer?
A: Women reach for Dean Davidson jewelry when they are looking for an accessible, unique and high-quality piece of jewelry that is perfect for everyday, but bold enough to wear for a special occasion. The Dean Davidson customer is someone who carefully curates their style, selecting pieces that reflect their sophistication and complement their uniqueness.
Q: What makes the brand unique?
A: We’re inspired by the beauty and culture of destinations around the world. We channel the spirit, culture and style of the places we’ve visited into unique designs.
Q: You’re celebrating a milestone this year — 15 years of the brand. How has it evolved throughout the years?
A: It began as a personal passion and hobby and grew into a global brand, carried by hundreds of retailers. Today we also have an e-commerce business, our first boutique in Toronto, and are working on a line of objects for the home that aligns with the aesthetics of our jewelry.
Q: Is there a ‘hero’ design that has emerged? If so, which one and what makes it so popular?
A: The Ipanema Earring inspired by the work of Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer has become our top-selling earring statement. The unique shape and movement of the earring along with the faceting of the sphere shaped gemstone have drawn the attention of numerous celebrities and customers over the years. We introduced a mini-size this past year as a follow-up and it has been equally popular.
Q: Are there any special plans/collections for the anniversary?
A: To commemorate our 15th anniversary, I designed a collection entitled Revival that honors some of the most loved styles of the last 15 years. We are also highlighting our most iconic designs that are part of our current Icon and Signature Collections with a 15th Anniversary edit. And finally, we are partnering with the uber-talented artist, Yaw Tony, on two limited-edition silk scarves featuring styles from our 15th Anniversary edit.
