Instead of the usual pastels for spring and summer, there was a prevalence of primary colours in ready-to-wear collections this year.

Retailers are already seeing shoppers gravitate toward the bold palette that defines the summer 2026 fashion trends. Runway shows in the major capitals showcased vivid yellows, deep blues and a striking fire-engine hue, signaling a clear shift away from pastel conventions.

Colour palette dominates runways

Designers in New York, Paris, London and Milan placed primary hues at the centre of their collections. A monochrome yellow look appeared on the catwalks of Rabanne and Fendi, while cobalt tones were highlighted by Marc Jacobs and Victoria Beckham. The bright fire-engine hue was a recurring element in looks from Balenciaga and Chanel, prompting fashion editors to recommend a single pop of colour to stay current. Red was so dominant that Harper’s Bazaar advised adding “a pop of bright fire-engine red” to outfits as the best way to adopt the season’s bold direction. Many designers also paired contrasting primary shades within the same outfit, creating striking visual contrasts.

A cobalt dress was accented with a bright red belt at Jil Sander, and a yellow top was matched with a blue skirt at Celine. Jewellery houses responded by promoting deep-blue sapphires alongside ruby pieces, and a rise in yellow-diamond settings was noted to complement the sunny tones. The trend extends to monochromatic yellow collections at Michael Kors, Carolina Herrera, and Loewe, where the hue dominates from head-to-toe looks.

Accessories that echo the colour story are now in demand. Sales teams are advised to showcase huggie hoops and short drop earrings that mirror the vivid palette, while chunky bangles set with coloured gemstones are positioned as a counterbalance to the sporty silhouettes seen on the runways.

Sporty collegiate vibe and statement skirts

The season also revived a youthful, campus-inspired aesthetic. Mini pleated tennis skirts appeared in collections from Dior and Alice + Olivia, while short shorts were featured by Givenchy and Max Mara. Bralette tops were highlighted by Fendi and Prada, completing the relaxed yet upscale look. The trend also includes schoolgirl-inspired pieces at Rabanne and Lacoste, where rugby stripes and lively blue polo shirts create a playful yet polished mood.

For shoppers, this means pairing relaxed garments with raised accessories. A pair of sleek huggie hoops can add refinement to a bralette, while stacked bangles—especially those set with diamonds or coloured stones—enhance the visual impact of a striped polo or a varsity sweater. Sales associates should suggest on-the-lobe buttons or short drop earrings to complement the lingerie-inspired bra tops, while chunkier bangles raise the sporty blazers seen at Ralph Lauren and Max Mara.

Footwear followed the laid-back direction, with designers opting for sneakers, sandals and flip-flops that expose the full length of the leg.

Statement skirts with generous volume are another focal point. Designers such as Balenciaga, Givenchy and Carolina Herrera presented flared silhouettes that draw attention to the hips and pelvis. Flouncy skirts and peplums, seen at Max Mara, Khaite, and Stella McCartney, shift focus away from the blouse, emphasizing the lower half.

In practice, the combination of a simple, plain top with a bold, wide skirt creates a balanced silhouette. Customers can offset the skirt’s drama by choosing wider drop earrings, chandeliers or forward-facing hoops, and a statement necklace, such as a bib or clustered pendant, to add vertical interest. Stacked bracelets, particularly those with coloured gemstones or diamonds, also help compete with the skirt’s volume, as seen in Michael Kors collections.

Red-carpet events this season have also leaned into old-Hollywood glamour. Opera gloves, floor-length gowns and statement cocktail rings were prevalent at the Golden Globes and the Oscars, according to fashion coverage.

Jewellery accents for the collegiate look

To complement the collegiate vibe, suggest signet rings paired with thicker bangles set with diamonds or coloured stones. Signet rings, in particular, align with the sporty yet polished aesthetic of rugby stripes and varsity sweaters, adding a subtle yet sophisticated touch.

Old Hollywood glamour on the red carpet

Floral prints showcase three-dimensional embroidered flowers, seen on pieces from Dolce & Gabbana, Dior and Nardos, complementing delicate pendants. These floral designs add texture and depth to outfits, making them ideal for pairing with statement jewellery. Overall, the season mixes vivid primary hues, bold skirts and glamorous eveningwear, prompting retailers to stock colourful gemstones, desert diamonds and statement accessories.
