Thai Artisans' Craftsmanship Celebrated in Resort Wear Collaboration - thai artisans
Designer Parissara Na Phatthalung collaborates with Kimpton Kitalay Samui for Whispers of the Waves collection.

Designer Parissara Na Phatthalung and Kimpton Kitalay Samui launched an exclusive collaboration, Whispers of the Waves. This collection integrates natural fibers, traditional dyeing techniques, and skilled weaving into resort wear and amenities.

Parissara’s brand philosophy emphasizes both beauty and purpose, aiming to showcase Thai craftsmanship in a contemporary, sophisticated manner. She collaborates closely with local artisans, preserving heritage techniques while responsibly sourcing materials.

A Shared Vision for Authentic Luxury

Kimpton Kitalay Samui sought a partner whose values aligned with its focus on craftsmanship, sustainability, and thoughtful design. Parissara’s ethos resonated with the resort’s commitment to refined luxury and authentic Thai heritage.

Their collaboration produced bespoke resort essentials crafted by artisans from Northern and Southern Thailand. Inspired by Koh Samui’s textures and colors, the collection features a hand tie-dye silk-and-linen robe, beach bag, scarf, and handwoven amenities and sandals.

Honoring Tradition, Adopting Innovation

Traditional hand-dyeing methods, such as resist-dyeing and the Mudmee technique (Thai Ikat), were adapted for modern use. Parissara worked with Thai dyers to create a layered, water-washed gradient that reflects the sea’s shifting tones.

Parissara’s method involves honoring the origin, involving artisans, and allowing techniques to evolve with the times. This ensures the craft‘s survival is tied to its ability to adapt and remain meaningful.

Parissara’s focus on Thai heritage craftsmanship began when she realized how fragile these traditions had become. She observed global brands borrowing from heritage crafts without supporting the makers, prompting her to work directly with artisans.

A key moment occurred in her hometown of Phatthalung, where she met one of the last elderly artisans in a once-thriving weaving community.

Preserving Craftsmanship Through Design

Parissara’s approach to design focuses on safeguarding traditional knowledge and techniques that risk disappearing. She emphasizes the personal connection to handmade work, valuing the unique imperfections that machines cannot replicate. By collaborating with artisans, she aims to preserve not only their craft but also the cultural heritage embedded in their work.

Crafting an Authentic In-Room Experience

The creative brief for Kimpton Kitalay Samui’s in-room collection aimed to create a deeply personal experience, reflecting the resort’s essence. The vision was for guest wear that felt effortless, elegant, and rooted in the island’s atmosphere.

This vision materialized into Whispers of the Waves, featuring a hand tie-dye silk-and-linen robe, beach bag, and scarf. These pieces are paired with handwoven amenities and sandals, all inspired by the sea’s soothing rhythm.

The fabric’s fluidity mimics water’s movement, while its texture catches light like the ocean at sunrise. A warm, sandy palette evokes an instant sense of calm, welcoming guests to a unique and luxurious experience.

The Art of Hand-Dyeing and Weaving

The Mudmee method, a traditional Thai Ikat technique, was used for the hand-woven amenities. This detailed process involves tying, binding, and dyeing yarns before weaving, creating patterns directly in the yarn. Multiple rounds of tying and dyeing build the design, which is then carefully aligned on the loom to reveal the motif in the final fabric.

The result is a softly blurred, shimmering pattern with deep cultural symbolism. This technique preserves traditional craftsmanship while ensuring each piece is unique, bearing the mark of the artisan’s skill and creativity.
