George Brown halts jewellery program enrollments - jewellery programs
The suspension means there will be no new intake for Jewellery Essentials, Jewellery Methods, Jewellery Arts, or Gemmology for the 2027-28 admissions cycle.

Starting with the 2027-28 academic year, George Brown Polytechnic will halt enrollments in all jewellery-related programs. The move stems from federal policy shifts impacting international student admissions, financial viability concerns, and evolving challenges within Ontario’s college system.

This suspension stems from a strategic review of the Jewellery programs launched in 2025. A recent analysis determined that the existing delivery model is no longer viable due to the programs’ financial and operational challenges alongside shifting conditions in the sector.

Federal policy changes impacting international student admissions have added to uncertainties surrounding enrollment and planning. These include adjustments to study-permit allocations, Provincial Attestation Letter requirements, and Post-Graduation Work Permit eligibility.

The suspension means there will be no new intake for Jewellery Essentials, Jewellery Methods, Jewellery Arts, or Gemmology for the 2027-28 admissions cycle. Current students will continue to be supported through a teach-out plan.

George Brown confirmed that students currently registered and meeting academic standards will be able to finish their programs. The institution will deliver mandatory courses whenever feasible and offer approved alternatives or substitutions when needed.

Existing student services, including Academic Advising, Accessibility Services, Financial Aid & Awards, International Student Advising, Counselling & Well-Being, Indigenous Education & Services, and Career supports, will remain available to support students during the teach-out period.

George Brown is investigating potential partnerships and new ways to deliver jewellery education moving forward. The school remains engaged with its Program Advisory Committee to gather industry feedback on staffing demands and evolving skill requirements.

Industry collaborators are urged to keep assisting students through internships, applied learning projects, capstone experiences, and similar activities throughout the teach-out phase. Halting new intakes does not signal an official shutdown of the programs or jewellery education at the Polytechnic.
